One More Story

One More Story is an online library of the best of children's classic and contemporary literature. Through a simple point and click process, children can choose a book, see the illustrations and have the book read to them whenever they want.

They've just created a blog which is a great place to learn more, add suggested titles and discover different ways to use the site, whether you're a parent, teacher, or librarian.

Record Set in Germany (1938)

Driver Rudolf Caracciola set a new land-speed record (not recognized by all organizations) of 268.496 mph on the German Autobahn between Frankfurt and Darmstadt. His record remains the highest speed ever achieved on a public road. Later in the same day, a young driver named Bernd Rosemeyer died in a crash on the Autobahn in an attempt to surpass Caracciola's record.

While we don't have any car books from Germany, we do have a few picture books that automobile enthusiasts will certainly enjoy (at any speed).

Australia Day

On January 26, 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip guides a fleet of 11 British ships carrying convicts to the colony of New South Wales, effectively founding Australia. After overcoming a period of hardship, the fledgling colony began to celebrate the anniversary of this date with great fanfare.

In 1818, January 26 became an official holiday, marking the 30th anniversary of British settlement in Australia. And, as Australia became a sovereign nation, it became the national holiday known as Australia Day.

We have over two dozen titles from Australia and are pleased to have been able to work with such amazing authors and illustrators, such as Robert Ingpen, Colin Thompson, Julie Vivas, Tina Burke, Alison Lester, Elizabeth Stanley, Margaret Wild, Ron Brooks, Mem Fox, and Beth Norling (to name just a few).

The following books from Kane/Miller were originally published in Australia, winning numerous awards and honors both in the U.S. and in their native country.

Raising a Book Baby

I hate to brag, but I have a four-year old son who amazes me every day and a great job that allows me the flexibility that not many other single, working moms experience.

When my son was two months old, my maternity leave officially came to an end, or did it? I was able to bring him into the office with me until he was seven months old (just a bit too big to be expected to sit still - and stay quiet when I was on the phone).

Because he was with me in a professional environment, I feel that his verbal development excelled since he was privy to the adult conversations that were constantly taking place within the office.

This morning, as we were driving to pre-school, my son began reading the numbers on the buildings and houses to me as we drove past. He was very excited to be able to tell me all of the numbers he was seeing and to encourage him even more I said, "How did you get to be so smart?"

I didn't expect an answer but not even a second later he responded, in a very matter-of-fact tone, "It's because I read!"

He's right. Even though he's not reading words yet - to his dismay - he's started with numbers and the fact that he's quite fluent - and sounding out every word he sees - is all the encouragement I need to know that (so far) we're doing something right.

Check back in ten years from now...

The Year of the Rat

The Lunar New Year starts fresh on February 7th as we welcome in The Year of the Rat. It's been said that those born in The Year of the Rat are respected and considered courageous and enterprising. Rats know exactly where to find solutions and can take care of themselves and others with ease. They use their instinctive sense of observation to help others in times of need and are among the most fit of all the Animal signs to survive most any situation.

This all can also be said of Riley. He is, of course, a rat and one who inspires and makes readers smile. He's found in The Short and Incredibly Happy Life of Riley (by Colin Thompson & Amy Lissiat of Australia) and encourages us all to be more observant, patient, accepting and courageous.

Another suggested title, of course, is New Clothes for New Year's Day, by Hyun-Ju Bae of South Korea, which honors the Korean celebration of this annual holiday.
